MAAUN, Desert Sky Exploration Launch Space Education And Incubation Centre

Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in collaboration with Desert Sky Exploration Limited (DSEL) on Wednesday, unveiled a Space Education and Incubation Centre in the university as part of an effort to promote research in space science.

The launch of the center aims to serve as a breeding ground for space innovation while inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers to explore this exciting field.

Recall that MAAUN and DSEL had on 8th July, 2024, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on space exploration, with the agreement to establish a Space Incubation Center at the university.

In his address, Abdulkadir Nuhu Aminu, CEO of Desert Sky Exploration, emphasized the role of innovation hubs in developing Africa’s space economy.

According to him, the establishment of centre in the university is crucial in propelling Africa to become a leading continent in space exploration and technology.

Also in a remark, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing its potential to place Africa at the forefront of space technology and innovation.

He noted that the launch of the center is a testament to the university’s dedication to contributing to global scientific advancement.

Speaking, the Kano State Commissioner of Science and Technology, Alhaji Tajo Othman, represented by SSA on ICT, Ibrahim Yusuf Sharada, reaffirmed the state’s support for space innovation and encouraged students to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the newly established center.

He assured students that the Kano State Government is fully committed to supporting such centers with necessary resources for their growth and development.

The event also featured a stimulating panel discussion on the topic, “Space Innovation in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities.”

The panelists included Prof. Yusuf Adamu from Bayero University Kano, Barrister Umar Saje, Malam Ali Abubakar, who shared their expertise on the sun-moon connection, space science, and the potential of astronomy to unlock new frontiers in Africa’s space journey.

A question and answer session was held which provided the audience with the opportunity to engage with the experts on space innovation and exploration.

In his vote of thanks, Engr. Muftawu Sanusi commended the presenters for their insightful contributions and appreciated the audience for their active participation.
