The Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended the League of Northern Democrats (LND) saying that the organization means well for the North and for Nigeria. The governor made this comment while receiving the delegation of the LND in Government House, Maiduguri, Wednesday. Responding to the address of the delegation chairman, the governor commended the initiative and said it is a welcome development. He thanked the LND for its donation promising that it would be utilized judiciously. But more importantly, he thanked the team for its empathy to the people that it displayed. He said the LND by this visit and donation has shown that it has the people’s interest at heart. He therefore promised to support the cause of the LND in whatever way possible.
The delegation of 24 members was led by its Chairman Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, former Governor of Kano State, to sympathize with the government and people of the state over the recent devastating floods that caused serious damage to Maiduguri and its environs.
In his speech to the governor earlier, Sen. Shekarau stated that the League is a group of patriots from all parts of the North united to influence Nigeria’s politics and power dynamics for regional and national development. In support of the victims of the floods, the LND members contributed among them and donated the sum of N50m.
The team later visited the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where the Chief Medical Director, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, took them round the hospital premises showing them the extent of destruction wrecked by the flood which ran into tens of billions of naira. The CMD stated that in Nigeria today there is no elite group like the LND, going by its membership. He expressed his gratitude for the visit.
