Justice Walter Onnoghen Confirmed As Chief Justice of Nigeria By Senate

The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Onnoghen was confirmed after he was screened by the Senate for about 1 hour 15 minutes.

While he was being screened, the lawmakers raised questions which centers on the independence of the judiciary, judicial reforms, corruption in the Judiciary, as well as disobedience of court orders.

According to Walter Onnoghen, he insisted that the independence of the Judiciary system in the country will not stop under his tenure, as he warned against politicizing of the Judiciary, as the country would be in serious crisis if that is done.

Justice Walter Onnoghen who would retire from service in 2021 has been a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 2005.

Onnoghen’s confirmation on Wednesday, makes him the first CJN from the southern part of the country in about 30 years.
