Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has banned use of fireworks, bangers and mini-explosives, both in the cities and the villages, throughout the festive period.
This is as the governor has directed the police and other law enforcement agents to apprehend offenders.
Ikpeazu, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Godwin Adindu, said that is for the public to enjoy a peaceful and joyous Christmas and New year celebrations, devoid of any incident of violence or mishap.
“This ban is for the general good as fireworks have resulted in heavy fire incidents in many places in the past and have also been used as decoy by criminals to wreck havoc on innocent citizens at this period of the year.
“Therefore, the general public, especially youths and teenagers, are advised to conduct themselves peaceably and not to engage in activities that will spoil the mood of the festivities,” the statement reads.
The Governor also uses the opportunity to extend his good wishes and prayers to all Abians as they mark this year’s Christmas and New Year celebrations.
