The Nigeria Police Force has recruited 10,000 candidates to enhance its human capacity, and the need to train these recruits adequately is of high priority to the Police hierarchy.
“Training and human capacity enhancement are fundamental determinants of the level of efficiency of any organization. Indeed, as often said, no organization can perform above the capacity of its human assets,” according to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc.
The Inspector-General of Police held a meeting with Commandants of Police Colleges and Training Institutions at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, to discuss the issues regarding the training of recruits.
The recruit training for the 2020/2021 Phase of the Nigeria Police Recruitment exercise will commence on the 10th of January 2022. It will be held in the four Premier Police Colleges in Lagos, Kaduna, Maiduguri, and Orji River, as well as 12 other Police Training Institutions in the country.
According to the IGP, the training will last for six months to groom the recruits to become incorruptible, civil, and true Police personnel.
“Our vision is to ensure that the upcoming training is fit-for-purpose and must deviate from the old-fashioned standard that dehumanizes the recruits in a manner that turns them hostile to members of the public that they were recruited to serve. We plan to emplace a new training regime that must impart the virtues of professionalism, knowledge, discipline, confidence knowledge and critical decision-making potentials in the recruits. This is with the outcome of ensuring that they are trained appropriately and humanely enough to advance my agenda of ‘policing with courage and serving with compassion’,” he asserted.
While the IGP encouraged all Heads and instructors of Training Institutions to have a sense of dedication and discipline as all eyes will be on the Force, he warned that any personnel found guilty of any form of extortion of recruits will face the appropriate disciplinary measures.
Meanwhile, IGP Baba assured that the Federal Government had made adequate provision for the welfare of the recruits and the staff of the colleges.
