How Police Violated our Fundamental Human Rights–Suspects Who Stoned Jonathan’s Convoy By Masoyi, Lusa, Bauchi

Suspects arrested by Bauchi State Police Command over an alleged stoning of the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan in Bauchi at the recent Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign rally have alleged that Police violated their fundamental Human Rights.
The suspects through their counsel Barrister Shipi Rabo of YB Kirfi Chamber in Bauchi had yesterday wrote a formal complaint to the Chief Judge of Nigeria and the Executive Secretary of National Human Right Commission on the violation of the fundamental right to freedom and committal to Prison without being arraigned before a court by the Police since the judiciary workers are on strike at that time.
Barrister Rabo alleged that his clients were detained in Police custody for a number of days thereafter taken to Bauchi Federal Prison contrary to the 1999 constitution which says suspects on detention should be arraign in court between 24 and 48 hours depending on the proximity of the court.
He alleged that his client was held in prison within the period courts were on strike, and explained that his clients were subsequently arraigned at chief magistrate court Bauchi number 3 on the 19th February.
The counsel asked the commission to investigate how a suspect will be committed to prison without being arraign in court and to indict any person who may be found involve in this as an unconstitutional activity.
