Fifteen inmates saw freedom come their way as Governor Al-Makura granted them freedom, the governor under the prerogative of mercy accorded them freedom. The governor who used this as one way of celebrating his 62 year birthday.
The fifteen inmates will on Monday get their freedom, he also promised to tackle the issue of shortage of the logistics of moving inmates to court.
Al-Makura also assured the prison community all his support in curbing their nagging problems, the governor also donates 500 mattresses, two cows and one million as gift to the inmates.
The state governor also called the prison wardens to accord humanity feeling to those behind bars.
Al-Makura said; “Being in Prison is not a death warrant, as he asked the inmates to remain agile at all times.”
The Executive Secretary of National Human Right Commission, Dr. Ben Angwai decried congestion and delay in the dispensation of justice. He lamented the congestion in Lafia Prison as a peril to the livelihood of the inmates.
According to him, the prison with a capacity of 300 inmates has 617 inmates, out of the number 566 inmates are awaiting trial, as he complained about congestion.
The Executive Secretary listed shortage of manpower, and sophisticated working gadgets as a major problem facing the judicial system in the state.
In the prison there are 380 inmates serving in for robbery case, while 110 are in the prison due to culpable homicide.
Those granted pardon, are Lawal Ahmed, Joseph Tanko, Victor Philip, Jibrin Idris, Iliyasu Muazu, Sunday Joseph, Ambasa Adu, Embugadu Bansuwe, Abubakar Abdullahi, Daniel Johnson, Surajo Ishaku, John Olumezi, Nura Muhammed
