Gov. Ganduje Launches N1.6 Billion Urban Renewal Project

Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje today launched the modernization of narrow streets and pathways in Kano metropolis, under a programme tagged “Lunguna Kal Kal”, expected to gulp N1. 6 billion under the first phase, at Kankarofi quarters in Kano city.

The project involves constructing re-enforced concrete line drainages, providing cover slabs, fitting interlocking tiles as well as installing street lights along the lanes crisis-crossing localities in the old Kano city, under the urban renewal programme of the state government.

Under the first phase, the eight metropolitan local government areas of Kano municipal, Gwale, Tarauni, Ungoggo, Nassarawa, Fagge, Dala and Kumbotso will benefit.

Besides enhancing stressing planning and urban beautification, the project according to Governor Ganduje, is intended “to improve on sanitation and add value especially to the dwellers of the historic commercial city”.

“With this project, we intend to ease pedestrian mobility, create better environment for commercial activities to thrive at night, enhance community safety and address nagging environmental challenges, such as flooding” he stressed.

He added that the project would go a long way in addressing health challenges in the state, especially Malaria, pointing out that the re-construction of the drainages would check the breeding of mosquitoes.

Governor Ganduje, therefore enjoined the people to reciprocate the gesture by practicing better sanitation habits, noting that poor sanitation has long-term implications.

In his speech, the Managing Director of the state urban planning agency, KNUPDA, Arc. Bashir Mudi Adamu, told the gathering that the project would cover more localities between now and 2019.

On his part, the chairman, Kano Municipal council, Alhaji Mukhtar Ishaq Yakasai thanked the government for the project, assuring that the citizens would remain loyal to the government to enable them derive more dividends of democracy.
