Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has observed that educational curriculum planning must take into cognizance the manpower needs of the country for the desired result to be achieved.

He noted that lack of synchronization between the two variables in the past brought about gaps which have become difficult to fill, especially under the prevailing socio-economic situation in the country.

He made the remark during his investiture as fellow of the Nigerian Association for Educational Administration and Planning, NAEAP, during the association’s national conference, taking place at Bayero University, Kano.

Dr. Ganduje, a former lecturer at the Faculty of Education of Bayero University, was awarded the fellowship alongside his wife, Dr. Hafsatu Abdullahi Umar, a former school principal and currently, a lecturer at the same faculty.

The governor, therefore, challenged the association, through the national conference, to come up with strategies that would ensure sustainable educational development in the country, especially data that would help policy makers in education management.

On providing free education, the governor explained that providing free education at all levels in the country, without a sustainable way of financing the programme is unworkable especially given the present economic situation in the country.

“Education has been affected by the global economic crunch. So giving free education without examining the source of funding it, the entity responsible for the funding as well as its sustainability is not practicable”, the governor stressed.

Dr. Ganduje who dwelt on efforts by his administration to revamp the sector of education at all levels, pointed out however, that the government is sustaining thousands of its students on foreign scholarships with great difficulty because of dwindling financial resources.

“At the moment, we are working out a plan to effect promotion of our teachers at the primary school level to motivate them. We have also introduced education promotion committees because we have realized that the burden in the sector is too big for government to handle alone”, he maintained.

In his remarks, the National president of the Nigerian Association for Educational Administration and Planning, NAEAP, Prof. David Olufemi Durusaro described the theme of the conference “Exploring Changes in the Strategies for Financing Education for Sustainable National Development in Nigeria”, as apt in view of the economic challenges facing the country at the moment.

In his keynote address, the Director General, National Teachers Institute, Prof. Garba Azare, represented by Prof. Abdurrashid Garba, dwelt on the need to devise more means of funding education as well as the imperative of stronger community/private sector participation in the management of education at all levels.
