Gov. Badaru Directs Jigawa Assembly To Establish Laws That Will Protect Gawo Trees

Umar Akilu Majeri

Governor Muhammad Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa state has appealed to farmers in the State to plant Gawo trees in their farm as this will enable the reduction of dependence on modern fertilizer because Gawo leaves are more economical and have high nutrients.

Governor Badaru stated this at the official launching of the fertilizer tree Gawo concept planting in the Savana belt of Nigeria at Kaya Area of Garki Local government area in Jigawa state.

Badaru said the Jigawa State government is nursing over four million seeds of Gawo fertilizer trees across the 24 necessary centers in the state that will be distributed to farmers in the State as this will help to arrest the shortage of fertilizers to farmers and reduce cost spending in purchasing of fertilizer by farmers.

“It will be a continuous program that will help the farmers and if it is maintained, I am sure in future nobody among the politicians in the state will be voted unless he knows the value of Agriculture,” Gov. Badaru said.

He then directed the State Assembly through the Jigawa State Speaker Hon, Garba Idris Kareka that the Assembly should establish a law that will stop Fulani herdsmen from cutting the Gawo trees.

Badaru added further that people must guard the Gawo trees in their farmland and report anybody who fells their Gawo trees.

He urged farmers to plants up to thirty Gawo trees on their farm because of its importance, as the leaves of the trees will act as fertilizers.

Governor Badaru further stated that Government will not fold its arms allowing irresponsible habits of cutting trees as such behavioral acts will not be allowed to continue as whoever is found wanting must face government disciplinary action.

In his speech, the Minister of Agriculture Nanono advised farmers to guard their Gawo trees planted in their farms as it will help them in boosting agricultural production.
