The organized labour in Nasarawa state has described the fifty percent salary cut by governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura as an indication of weakness in leadership, challenging the chief executive to reduce the cost of governance such as security vote, overhead cost and maintenance of Police Chopper.

The organized labor challenged the state governor to explain to the Nigeria Labour Congress what the government was doing when the economy was in good shape, adding that what was the governor been doing with the excesses ?.

This was contained in a document titled “ORGANIZED LABOUR NASARAWA STATE, THE FACTS OF THE MATTER, SALARY CUT IN NASARAWA STATE PUBLIC SERVICE” and made available to universalreporters247.com

“The state governor gave reasons why she want to reduce salary is to create job opportunity ,this is not true because from our findings after salary cut the state government is going to realise only the sum of N180,000,000.00 which is less than the N200,000,000.00 security vote the governor is collecting monthly alone”.

The organized labour further advice governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura to stop collecting security vote and allocate it for employment, as the NLC said the huge amount can afford 10,582 vacancies to unemployed youths roaming the streets of Nasarawa state.

“N200,000,000.00 can employ 10,582 unskilled workers on GL01/1 (N18,900.00),employ 3,542 skilled (graduates) on GL08/2 (N56,000) as, well employ 831 directors on GL 16/9 (N241,000) ,this can accord the governor credit for that wonderful initiative.

“In the history of human existence nowhere in the world that salaries of workers was reviewed downwards after five years which is the period provided by law for salaries to be reviewed upward”.

While reacting on the assertion  of the state governor that workers which constitute only one percent of the population consumed 95 percent of the allocation of the state, the organized labour asserted that the wage bill of the state stand averagely at N1.9bn for 16,000 workers with pensioners.

The organized labour accused the committee for the review of salary of forging and presenting a fake resolution between the organized labour and the government side for smuggling a controversial report of fifty percent salary despite the vacation of the faulty committees report.

NLC raised eyebrow over the exemption of some section of civil servants, describing the policy as an injustice done to selected categories of workers, saying workers in the state has made enough sacrifice to the state, adding that health workers are excluded from the exercise.

The organized labour while reacting on the explanation by the state governor that the new national minimum wage was an error, said the minimum wage was a collective agreement between the state government and the labour, adding further that the upward review was as a result of extensive discussion and exchange of documents of facts and figures.

The labour described the position of the state governor affirming the implementation of the new minimum wage as a fallacy meant to gain sympathy from the public as untrue, the document however revealed that the minimum wage was dully negotiated and willingly accepted by government and the labour.

“We the workers in Nasarawa state are saying NO TO SALARY CUT” the organized labour unveiled that workers has make a voluminous sacrifices for the development of the state amongst which they listed as follows;

  1. Forfeiting four months arrears of salaries arising from the implementation of the national minimum wage in 2011 valued N2bn

  1. Forfeiting five years arrears of annual increment with each year’s financial implementation standing at N40, 000,000.00 totaling N200, 000,000.00 only as at March, 2016.

  1. No civil servants pay tax constant and timely as workers in Nasarawa state

  1. No promotion / annual increment

  1. Lack of training/staff development from 2011

The document also stated that; “It is unfortunate for any reasonable government to wake up overnight and decide to cut salaries of her workers because of a wrong perception that minimum wage of 2011 was implemented in error in Nasarawa state.”
