In 2013, when Maryam Abacha University was established in Niger Republic, many didn’t know that soon the first officially approved bilingual university in West Africa, will snowball into becoming a citadel of learning of repute not only in West Africa but within the African continent as a whole.
The dazzling rise of the first officially approved bilingual university in West Africa to many didn’t come as a surprise; this is because the institution set the ball rolling as soon as it was established, in spite of the difficulties faced in setting up a business of this kind in this part of the world.
But to the founder and President Adamu Gwarzo going into this kind of venture may after all not be an issue to him, owing to the fact that his previous job of being a journalist of international repute may have taken him into different worlds of realities where institutions of such nature have been established.
So, the coming of Maryam Abacha University offered many endless opportunities to students, especially with its promotion of bilingualism which is aimed at bringing together different nationalities from Nigeria, Niger, Rwanda, South Africa, etc.
In the words of its founder/president Adamu Gwarzo, in his inaugural message to the students, he said; “The policy thrust of the university is to place emphasis on knowledge since knowledge is life. It also aspires to become one of the world-class best in the various courses it seeks to offer for students.
“Indeed, the Institution seeks to become a global Centre of learning that extends the boundaries of knowledge and human experience through research, creativity, innovation, and the delivery of a professional education of the highest caliber in Africa and the world.
The mission and the goal of MAAUN as an educational institution is the persistent motive to provide a distinguished educational service that conforms to the wishes of the society towards promoting knowledge and discipline.”

According to a release made available by the founder of the school, Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, the decision to name the university after Dr Maryam Abacha was reached after due consideration of her efforts to develop the African continent. The release noted out that, “Her name stood out amongst the sea of names up for nomination because she has been a mother of humanity who has served her nation and the African continent as a whole with a passion to develop the human race and civilization.
“It also commended the wife of late General Sani Abacha for the roles she has played in alleviating the suffering of women and children in the war-torn regions of Africa through her foundation, the African First Ladies Peace Mission which she set up to complement the peacekeeping mission missions of several African governments.
The statement said Maryam Abacha was a philanthropist who fought for the unity of African nations and hailed the peacekeeping exploits of her foundation. According to the release the university which is to be called Maryam Abacha American University of Niger would serve as an opportunity for African youths to relate and exchange cultural ideas thereby promoting a more integrated Africa.
Being a lover of education, Professor Gwarzo, even after establishing two universities, didn’t stop at that, he has gone ahead with the establishment of another two universities, namely Canadian University of Nigeria, Abuja, and Franco-British International University, Kaduna respectively.
