Information Minister Sen. Patricia Akwashiki has strongly condemned the bombing of TAO FM in Okene, Kogi State, yesterday night by unknown assailants.
She described the attack on the radio station as a criminal act of arson and an assault on democracy and the freedom of expression.
Sen. Akwashiki remarked that for democracy to consolidate in Nigeria, citizens must imbibe the culture and temperament for the freedom of expression to flourish without any inhibition.
She said anyone who felt offended by collective or individual expression might approach the law court for redress and claim damages instead of resorting to self-help through criminal enterprise.
The Minister called on security agencies to immediately launch an investigation into the attack on TAO FM, Okene with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice.
Sen. Akwashiki equally called on the Inspector General of Police to provide adequate security for media houses and journalists operating in the country to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
Sen. Patricia Akwashiki stated the irrevocably commitment of the Goodluck Jonathan administration to the freedom of expression, which she said, was cardinal in a democracy.
She commiserated with the relations of the victims of the bomb attack and prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased.
