Fertilizer Scam: Nasarawa Assembly Directs Gov Al-Makura To Prosecute And Fires Culprits

Lawmakers in Nasarawa State directed Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura to arrest, prosecute and relieve any gullible government officials caught diverting fertilizers meant for farmers.

The speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Honorable Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi stated this in Lafia after the chairman; House committee on Agriculture, Barrister Abubakar Kana (APC) Kokona West moved a motion on the need for the House to investigate alleged cases of fertilizers scam and diversion by government officials in the state

Balarabe Abdullahi said the arrest and prosecution and relieve of gullible government officials scheduled with the responsibilities of distributing fertilizers to the farmers became imperative.

Saying punishing the recalcitrant would serve as a deterrent to others with the same questionable character while given a responsibility.

The Speaker applauded governor Almakura for distributing fertilizers at a subsidized rate of N4000 per bag to the farmers, calling on farmers to report any case of diversion of fertilizers in their communities to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.

The speaker thanked the mover of the motion, adding that the motion was very serious matter and Assembly cannot sit down and allow some government officials scheduled with the responsibilities of distributing fertilizers to the farmers in their respective communities to sabotage Almakura’s good efforts.

“This house will not allow any body to sabotage governor Almakura’s effort in boosting food production in the state and we will not hesitate to advise the state government not only to arrest, prosecute any government official who found in diverting fertilizers meant for farmers.

“But they should also be relieved of their appointment to serve as deterrent to other so as to boost food production, fight unemployment and boost the socio-economic development of the state and the country at large.

Balarabe reinstated the commitment of the house to continue to enact laws and pass resolutions that have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.

Earlier, Barr.Abubakar Kana (APC) Kokona West chairman,House committee on Agriculture said that his motion was based on the fact that there are cases of fertilizers diversion in some local government in the state.

Kana called for investigation of the alleged fertilizers diversion by some government officials in some local governments and development areas in the state.

Muhammed Muluku (APC) Nassarawa Eggon East seconded the motion on the need for the house to investigate alleged fertilizers scam and diversion by some government officials.

The House unanimously agreed passing a resolution directing governor Al-Makura to arrest, prosecute and relieve any government officials found in diverting fertilizers meant for the state farmers.

Governor Umaru Al-Makura, it would be recalled on July 5, inaugurated the sale of fertilizers to farmers in Jenkwe, Obi Local Government Area, at a subsidized rate of N4, 000 per bag.

The governor said the state government would spend N1 billion on the procurement of 10,000 tons of fertilizers for the 2017 cropping season.
