Nasarawa state government has directed all civil servants in the state to withdraw their salaries account from their individuals’ accounts to Syke bank which is the approved bank by the State Government

The directive was surrounded with untold hardship faced by state civil servants in the state as they could not receive their April and May salaries for failure to comply with the directive.

Feelers from other banks revealed that most banks where the civil servants received their salaries complained the low patronage due to withdrawal of the Government patronage.

Officials from other banks, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the directive created a low patronage from their customers. As according to them, the directive by the state government has some hiding agenda, which he said if proper measure is not taken banks in the state might close down their operation. One of the affected civil servant, who pleaded for anonymity said since I was employed by the Nasarawa state Government, I have been banking with UBA but when government directive came I don’t have any alternative rather than to open another bank account with  Skye Bank.

A civil servant who operates a salary account with First Bank also made similar complain that the Government had to open an account with Skye bank without their consent, arguing that his April and May salaries have not been paid due to the non-complaint with government directive.

Confirming the allegation, the state Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Ramatu Ajuji Abubakar said she is aware of the exercise, but denied knowledge where the directive came from.

“In fact, I am not aware of that. I only had it as a rumor and I am investigating it. I have already issued out a memo to that effect and I am still waiting for the response in order to ascertain exactly what happened.

The state government can never compel any of my staff as a commissioner of education and cannot force anybody to open account from anywhere,” she added.
