Mercy Orija, an ex-convict has reportedly raped a 12-year-old girl to death in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
The victim was said to have been defiled and killed by the ex-convict in an uncompleted building in the community when she went out to buy detergent to wash her stockings.
The incident was said to have occurred on Wednesday at Fehintoluwa community in Idiya, Abeokuta-North LGA of the state.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, police spokesperson in Ogun, confirmed the incident to the TheCable on Monday.
Oyeyemi said Janet Fakeye, the deceased, was a secondary school student in the state capital.
He said Orija had earlier been convicted and just returned from prison. The police spokesperson said the suspect went into hiding after committing the crime.
Oyeyemi said the police has launched a manhunt to ensure the suspect is apprehended.
“We are still on the case because immediately he did it, he ran away. We are still after him,” he said.
‘The CP has directed that he should be traced and arrested. So, we are after him and we are very sure that any moment from now, we will get him arrested.
“The girl was in Day Secondary School. She was a 12-year-old girl; that was the age given by her parents.
“He has been sentenced to prison before. He just came back.”
Meanwhile, Pauline Tallen, Minister of Women Affairs, had earlier called for improved efforts to ensure the protection of girls owing to the increased level of rape and violence against adolescent girls in the country.
