Customs Seize N104.4m Worth Of Smuggled Goods In Adamawa, Taraba In One Month

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, has intercepted contraband items worth 104.4 million within 4 weeks of it’s anti-smuggling operations.

This was disclosed at a press briefing in Yola, by Garba Bashir the Customs Area Controller, describing the seizures as a major breakthrough and significant victory in the ongoing battle against smuggling in Nigeria’s border regions.

“In one month, our operatives, through intelligence-driven and technology-supported operations, made strategic interceptions along key smuggling routes,” Comptroller Bashir said.

“This reinforces our dedication to safeguarding the nation’s economy and aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision, as well as the directives of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.” He added

The seized goods included 36,835 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) concealed in 1,219 jerrycans and 24 drums, suspected to be smuggled out to neighboring countries.

Also intercepted were 101 pieces of raw donkey skin, a prohibited item due to environmental concerns and the threat it poses to rural livelihoods.

“Each skin is evidence of a donkey slaughtered illegally. This not only contravenes our laws but also endangers rural communities that depend on donkeys for farming and transport,” the Controller noted.

The seizures were made at notorious smuggling hotspots including Mubi-Sahuda Road, Girei-Wuro Boki, Maiha Road, Bakin Kogi, Belel-Farang, Gurin-Fufore, Apawa-Jalingo, and Gembu.

In line with safety protocols and statutory procedures, part of the flammable PMS was auctioned to the public, with proceeds already remitted to the Federal Government.

More auctions are scheduled to follow in accordance with the 2023 Nigeria Customs Service Act.

Comptroller Bashir also highlighted the risks faced by officers during operations, including physical assaults and online harassment.

“Despite these challenges, our resolve remains unshaken. We will continue to dismantle smuggling networks through lawful means,” he said.

He urged citizens and the media to support the campaign, assuring that legitimate businesses are protected.

 “This is not a war against commerce, but a war against criminality. Genuine traders have nothing to fear.” Bashir emphasized
