The Chairman Caretaker Committee Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi state Dr. Alqassim Ibrahim has warned  against  indiscriminate felling of trees in the forest for charcoal purposes, just as 5 suspects were arrested for cutting down trees in the area.

Alqassim disclosed this at a press briefing weekend in Bauchi, saying felling trees is identified as one of the major impediments in the fight against environmental degradation and deforestation.

According to him, that was the reason the council set up a committee to sensitize and create awareness among the general public on the dangers of cutting down trees and removing trees, which deprived the forest of portions of its canopy that was a major component of environmental protection.

“This disruption leads to more extreme temperature swings that can be harmful to plants and animals,” he said.

He said trees are noted for playing a critical role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel global warming.

Dr Alqassim listed the growing urban sprawl, agricultural activities, and logging for commercial purpose, as factors for indiscriminate felling of trees for charcoal usage, wood and timber.

The Caretaker Chairman however disclosed that 5 suspects were arrested by vigilante security at Gidan Waya area of the local Government Council in respect of felling trees for the purpose of charcoal production.

He said “the suspects were arrested while carrying out their nefarious activities in the forest area of Gidan Waya causing environmental degradation”

Dr. Ibrahim said the council give much attention to curbing security situation in all the communities, he said “meanwhile the arrested suspects were handed over to the police authorities for further investigation.”
