In line with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), policy on financial education the bank has mentored secondary school students on how best to start savings for a better future.
Mentoring the students at Government Secondary School Hwolshe in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, the CBN Deputy Director Customer protection Hajiya Khadija Kasim, told the students that they should begin to save starting with little amount to allow it grow bigger.
She said: “As students it is good for you can begin to save from today for the good of the future and the first step to do that is by first setting a goal of what one want to achieve for himself.”
According to her savings can either be done in cash, buying of goods or bank savings, she stressed that as students they can use saving box even at home to start savings.
The deputy director said while fielding questions from journalists, that the essence of the mentoring was in line with the; “wonderful frame work that we have developed for financial literacy, in Nigeria.”
She said the frame work has; “put all Nigerians into segments and one of the segment is the child and youth,” which the CBN comes out on days such as the a global money week and the global savings day to inculcate into the children the habits of savings and the; “target is to teach them on how best to manage their resources for better use.”
Hajiya Kasim said the frame work is also designed in such a way that the CBN being the financial regulator Nigeria can educate the people on any thing that matters in their rights dealing with financial institutions.
The mentoring which was done as part of the world savings day, featured questions and answers of which T-shirts and savings boxes were won by some students who answered questions from the CBN.
