Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has for the third time failed to grace the invitation to appear before the Senate.
For the third time, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has failed to honour an invitation to appear before the Senate.
It would be recalled that the IGP, Ibrahim Idris has on two occasions failed to honour the Senate invitation where he sent representative, citing official engagements to Bauchi and Kaduna respectively as reason for not appearing before the Senate.
However, when it was time for him to be accompanied in to the Chamber of the Senate, the senators realized that the IGP was not available.
After then, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki declared the non-appearance of the IGP.
“I’ve just been informed that the IG or any members of his team are not here,” he said.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, said efforts by him to reach out to the IG in two days failed, described the non-appearance as “unusual and unfortunate.”
Ahmed Lawan further said; “It is very unusual for a public servant to act like this. I have never seen this before anywhere in the world, we need to take a decision because this affects security in the entire country.”
Speaking Senator Emmanuel Bwacha called for a closed session for the lawmakers to determine the action to be taken by the Senate against the IG, “This is unacceptable and disrespectful. It requires immediate action and I think this Senate needs to take serious action in looking for a way forward.”
“What is happening today in Nigeria shows that democracy is dying bit by bit and also shows the abuse of power and office by the IG. What the IG is doing in the eyes of the world shows that there is no respect for the law,” said Senator Enyinaya Abaribe.
Senator Isah Misau, said; “What the IGP is doing is not against the Senate but against the presidency that appointed him into office, it’s unfortunate. The IG is not competent to be in the office” – Senator Isah Misau.
“We need to take a very drastic action. We cannot take this embarrassment any longer. This is a national disgrace,” he said.
According to him, sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution empower the legislature to summon the Police boss.
