Twenty-three-year-old Auwalu Muhammed from Bauchi State has emerged winner of the American University of Nigeria’s computer-based aptitude test for merit scholarships.

As the star performer in the selection test conducted on August 5 across 25 centers throughout the federation, Mr. Muhammed has been awarded a full scholarship (including tuition, room, and board/feeding) for the 2017/18 session.  He graduated from Inuwa Dahiru Memorial Secondary School in Bauchi and is enrolled in the University’s Natural and Environmental Sciences program.

Thirty seven other winners (one from each of the 36 states and Abuja) will receive a full-tuition scholarship for fall 2017 semester, and another 37, again one from each state plus Abuja, will get a 50-percent tuition scholarship, also for fall semester, which opened for classes on August 22.

President Dawn Dekle congratulated all the scholarship winners and welcomed them and their parents to the AUN family.  “We are delighted to welcome our latest class of students into our learning community, and they are already creating a buzz on campus with our returning students. All of our students are future leaders and entrepreneurs, set to transform the economy and create jobs. AUN is here to support them and teach them the skills to become lifelong learners.  Our students are not just consumers of knowledge on our campus, they are active producers of knowledge, whether it is as a member of a research team led by one of our world-class faculty members or serving on a startup team for a new business through our incubator center – we all roll up our sleeves and participate alongside each other.”

Assistant VP of Recruitment & Marketing, Julius AyukTabe, said that this generous scholarship program, which targets students from all across Nigeria, is a continuation of AUN’s tradition of attracting the brightest students from throughout the country, and throughout Africa and the world.

“Each year, our University sets aside a large fund for scholarships and other forms of financial aid for undergraduate students.  The merit scholarships were increased from 67 last year to 75.”

The highly competitive selection test for the scholarships covering all of the nation’s geopolitical zones drew over 300 students to the 25 examination centers.  The official list of winners is available on www.aun.edu.ng

Since its founding in 2003 by former Nigerian Vice President, HE Atiku Abubakar GCON, AUN has been bringing together the best and brightest candidates from all over Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Niger, Chad, Sierra Leone, and other African countries, to study under one roof.

The University, which has given out more than 900 merit scholarships since inception, seeks to make its rigorous American-style liberal education possible for all qualified applicants, regardless of family income.
