Alleged Intimidation Of Journalists In Niger: Group Urges Gov. Bago To Respect Press Freedom

A coalition of concerned democratic stakeholders has condemned what it described as a growing pattern of alleged arrests and intimidation of journalists in Niger State, calling on Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago to respect constitutional rights and uphold democratic principles.

In a press release issued on Wednesday and signed by Sani Ahmad Zangina, Deputy National Convener and North-West Coordinator of the One North Movement, the group expressed alarm over reports of media suppression under the current administration in the state.

The statement accused the Niger State government of actions that undermine freedom of expression and press freedom, warning that such developments pose a threat to democratic governance if left unchecked.

Mr Zangina urged Governor Bago to adhere strictly to the rule of law, emphasizing that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees citizens the right to free speech and a vibrant press. He noted that democracy flourishes in an environment where dissenting views are tolerated and constructive criticism is encouraged.

Drawing a comparison with the federal government, the group praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as a commitment to democratic values, including tolerance and inclusiveness.

“The administration at the centre has demonstrated that critics and political opponents can coexist within a democratic framework without fear of repression,” the statement read, warning that actions at the state level that appear to contradict these ideals could damage the broader image of the government.

The stakeholders further stressed that no leader is above public scrutiny, recalling that past leaders, including the late Muhammadu Buhari, were subject to criticism during their time in office.

According to the statement, resorting to arrests and intimidation not only erodes public trust but also weakens democratic institutions.

The group also referenced concerns raised by the International Press Institute Nigeria over the state of press freedom, cautioning that continued violations could attract both national and international scrutiny.

Mr Zangina called on the Niger State government to immediately halt any actions perceived to infringe on press freedom, ensure that law enforcement agencies operate within the bounds of due process, and foster an atmosphere of dialogue and democratic engagement.

“Leadership is a responsibility to serve and protect all citizens—not to silence them,” the statement added.

The group warned that failure to address the concerns could lead to escalation to relevant federal authorities, reiterating its commitment to defending democratic values and protecting civic space across the country.
