Al-Makura VS Agwai: Court Remands Agwai Nasarawa PDM Senatorial Candidate Over Character Assassination

The presiding Judge of Magistrate court III,Lafia,Iliya Aku remanded the senatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) representing Nasarawa South Senatorial district in Nasarawa State,Alhaji Abdullahi Agwai for alleged defamation, injurious falsehood and criminal intimidation against the personality of the immediate past governor,Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar instituted the case following a formal complaint by the Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Senator representing Nasarawa South senatorial district.
The governor instituted a suit against his opponent in 2019 Senatorial election naming the two time governor a land grabber and was published in an online platform,”Nasarawa Mirror, Al-Makura stated that action he alleged caused him sychological trauma and that of his family thus dafaming his character.
Alhaji Abdullahi Agwai denied the allagations when the First Information Report (FIR) was read to him in court.
In his oral bail application, counsel to the defendant, Barr. Abdullahi Mohammed who quoted several sections of the law urged the court to grant his client bail on grounds that as a great politician and title holder,he would either interfere with investigation not jump hail.if granted.
Objecting to the bail application, the Police prosecutor, Okudu quoting sections of Nasarawa State Criminal Justice Administration law and the Penal Code submitted that granting the defendant bail will prejudice Justice.
He said the offence committed by the defendant was criminal in nature.
The presiding magistrate, Iliya Aku reserved ruling on the bail application till 18th September and adjourned the case till 9th October accordingly.
Agwai is currently challenging the victory of Umaru Tanko Al-Makura at the Election Petition Tribunal as well the electoral umpire,the Independent National Electoral Commission for expunging the logo of PDM from the ballot papers used in 2019 election.
In this video he accused Al-Makura of bastardizing the entire system, causing gully erosion, land grabbing, increase in institutional and systemic corruption, dearth of Nasarawa Investment And Property Development Company (NIPDC), Percentage payment and amongst others.
