Adamawa Govt. To Rehabilitate The 275 Sambisa Rescued Hostages

Governor Bala James Nggilari has assured the 275 rescued women from Sambisa forest by the military of government continued assistance and support.

 

The Governor, who stated while also presenting trucks load of food items to victims of insurgency, explained that government have a responsibility to continue to cater for the plight of Internally Displaced Person as a result of insurgency.

 

He pointed out that the gesture is aimed at bringing succor to the victims.

 

The Governor narrated that since the inception of his administration the tide has turned against the insurgents following the engagement of the local hunters, vigilante and the military while the plight of IDPs have remained the priority of his administration and called on the incoming administration to do same.

 

He said he is also affected by the scourge as three persons were murdered in his home by insurgents adding that government had intervened at various times by providing food, clothing and medicaments to the IDPs at various camps across the state.

 

Governor Nggilari who met the AUN president, Margee Ensign at the camp, praised her for consistently rendering support to the IDPs and appealed to others to compliment government effort in that regard.

 

A camp Coordinator from National Emergency Management Agency, Sa’ad A. Bello said in Adamawa state, at the peak of the insurgency, two hundred and seventy thousand IDPs were hosted across camps in the state, while over thirty thousand were residents in Malkohi camp.

He said out of the rescued victims, sixty nine are women while the remaining are children not more than eighteen years of age.

 

The Coordinator said the victims are in pathetic situation and pointed out that education and commerce need to be stabilized in areas affected by insurgency as people return to their homes.

Sa’ad acknowledged the support of Adamawa state government and other United National bodies in their contributions towards providing succor to Internally Displaced Persons.

 

In his remarks, the Adamawa state Executive Secretary of ADSEMA Haruna Dauda Furo said two hundred and seventy five IDPs were rescued from Sambisa forest and brought to the camp.

According to him, twenty two of the number were in distress situation at the time of arrival and had been admitted at the Federal Medical Centre as many others are malnourished, while some have bullet wounds.

 

Haruna Furo said shortly after arrival, ten families were reunited, and that majority of them had not taken bath in the last three months.

 

One of the rescued victims Aisha Abbas, while responding, thanked the military for rescuing them adding that they are not aware that election had taken place but expressed the hope that the new administration will continue with the effort to end insurgency.

She narrated that Adamawa state Government in particular had given them treatment they deserve and prayed for the end to insurgency.

 

The military had last saturday rescued about two hundred and seventy women and children when it invaded Sambisa forest, a stronghold of the insurgents and brought them to the Malkohi camp under the care of NEMA.
