Adamawa Government Records 8 Cases Of Rape, Convicts 2

The Adamawa Government says it recorded eight child sexual violence cases in the state in 2016.

The government also confirmed that it secured the conviction of two of the suspects by the state High Court.

Mrs Yakubu Tiki, the Director, Child Development, state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, disclosed this in an interview with Newsmen in Yola.

“Last year, we received eight cases of Child sexual violence (rapes) cases in the state and two of the suspects were convicted.

“And these cases were reported to us by our partners and after proper investigation, the ministry filed the cases to court,” Tiki said.

She said that the ministry in collaboration with various national and international NGOs, are partnering to ensure that child rights are protected.

She explained that among the measures put in place by the ministry is putting more effort to create awareness to protect children against all sort of abuses and violence.

According to the director, the ministry partnered with other key MDAs, including the state ministries of health and education as well as security agencies, to assist the affected children and their families against stigma and health related issues.

“Protection of child abuse is a collective responsibility, hence the need for all stakeholders to join hands for successful implementation of the Child Rights Act,” Tiki said.

She said the ministry had opened child development offices in all the 21 local government areas of the state.

She called on communities to report any child abuse case in their locality for necessary action.
