The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Comrade Usman Yusuf Dutse has stated that the association has rejected the imposition of any person outside the Polytechnic system as Rector in the Polytechnics, he disclosed this during a courtesy call to the management of the Isa Mustapha Agwai 1 Polytechnic, Lafia under the headship of Augustine Ali Gabu held at the Governing Council chamber marking the 71st Zonal executive Council meeting of Zone ‘B’.
According to the national President,”ASUP we not allow an alien to be appointment as Rector, adding that Polytechnic is for Chief Lecturer.
“After building a system somebody will take over from us that put in our best for years,we will not allow that he stated”.
“We are ready to occupy any Polytechnic that goes contrary against Polytechnic Act,we are all contributors to the sector”.
Comrade Usman confided that the appointment of Rector is the prerogative of the council,urging the management to guide the Governing Council.
The Zonal Coordinator of ASUP,Comrade Abdullahi Yalwa called on the management to implement pending 2017-2019 promotions as he applauded the management for the payment of 2015-2016 arrears.
He also urged the management to accord premium to headship allowances which he said is the right of lecturers.
“We are not against anybody from the University,we don’t know why our people were disqualified from the recent screening exercise for the position of Rector”.
He further buttressed that the recent Polytechnic Act has stated clearly that only Chief Lecturer is qualified to be a Rector.
The covering Rector of the Polytechnic,Augustine Ali Gabu applauded the leadership of the Union for their maturity.
Gabu assured the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic that pending promotions would be addressed before the end of 2019.
Gabu commended the Union members in Isa Mustapha Agwai 1 Polytechnic, Lafia for hardwork and dedication.
“We are not in conflict with the Union, he identify paucity of fund to the delayed in the payment of pending promotions”.
The covering Rector described headship allowances as a right but not a privilege.
While reacting over the advertisement for the positions of principal officers placed by the Governing Council, the covering Rector declined comment as he said is purely issue of the council.
He in addition buttressed that Union should be seen as an avenue for dialogue but not skirmishes.
