Aba On Lockdown As Ukwa-Ngwa People Protest Abia Guber Appeal Court Judgment

  • Call on Supreme Court to upturn the judgment

Over 20,000 protesters from the Ukwa-Ngwa ethnic nationality  took to the streets of Aba Saturday morning in a peaceful protest against Thursday’s Appeal Court judgment which nullified the victory of Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

Vehicular movements in Aba were grounded as the protesters blocked major roads in the commercial city.

Inscriptions on the placards displayed by the protesters read:”No one should disrupt the peaceful coexistence in Abia State with a bought justice”, “we will sustain the fight against injustice”.

Others are “Okezie Ikpeazu is the governor we voted into office, and remains the governor”, no Okezie Ikpeazu, no Abia State”.

One of the protesters Obinna Egbelefu, who described the judgment as the height of rape of justice, called on the Supreme Court to  set the judgment aside.

Egbelefu wondered how the Appellate Court cancelled elections in three local government areas of the state, which are the strong hold of the governor.

Another protester, Victor Onyendi argued:”There is no how you can disenfranchise over 300,000 voters in the state, including the governor. The judgment is the greatest joke of the century”.

Ukwa-Ngwa ethic-nationality constitutes nine out of the 17 local government areas of Abia State.

The bloc has not produced a governor since the creation of the state.Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu is the first Ukwa-Ngwa man to have a shot at the governorship position of Abia State.
