The All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Owerri West State Constituency ended in a sweeping victory for Kanayo Onyemaechi, who emerged as the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 Imo State House of Assembly election.
The primary election, held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, across the ten Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wards in Owerri West Local Government Area, attracted four aspirants seeking the party’s ticket.
At the conclusion of the exercise, Onyemaechi secured a commanding 28,411 votes to defeat other contenders in the race.
His closest challenger, Osinachi Amako, popularly known as “No Vex,” polled 1,121 votes, while Ngozi Duru secured 842 votes. Jaja Amobi garnered 756 votes.
The outcome of the primary election reaffirmed Onyemaechi as the APC candidate to represent Owerri West State Constituency in the 2027 Imo State House of Assembly election.
Supporters and party faithful who gathered during the collation of results erupted in celebration following the announcement, describing the outcome as a reflection of the lawmaker’s popularity, grassroots connection, and legislative performance.
Political stakeholders within the local government area also commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, noting that the transparent process demonstrated the strength and unity of the APC in Owerri West.
Many party supporters expressed confidence that the result would further strengthen the APC’s chances of retaining the constituency seat during the 2027 general elections.
