98,000 Women Die Annually from Smoke in Nigeria- WHO

firewoodThe World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that about 98,000 Nigerian women die annually from the use of firewood smoke.

The country manager, Gabriel ojobo who flagged-off the awareness campaign across the nation called on federal and state governments to enact law that would take the energy problem seriously.

He charged media practitioners and the general public to partner with the appropriate body in creating enlightenment campaign in educating plateau women.

According to him, the state had lost about 400,000 hectares of forest reserve to deforestation during the two years period in Nigeria.

Ojobo explained further that insufficient energy has continued to hamper socioeconomic wellbeing and environmental development of the people  .

He stresses that ,” dependence fossil fuels for household and industrial activities despite the attendant challenges (scarcity, exorbitant price, costly subsidy)  has continued to occupy central position in national discourse.

Ojobo reiterated that a combination of these shortfalls and many others have persistently kept poverty figure high especially in BOP.

‪Pointing out that , SF Green Resources Nig Ltd and solar fire  concentration Oy of Finland have teamed up to bring succour  with a product called Gosol Sol 1 and Sol 4 to put an end to global challenges.

He said plateau will serve as a pilot with the help of new technology which can reduce the number of distance people trek to fetch fire wood.

Ojobo added that;  “ when we come  into partnership with Gol Sol, a company based in finland , the idea was to immediately bring the technology to  built and reduce e long suffering and hardship been experienced .

‪They have a model of product which was introduce into Nigeria market and many other Africa countries to benefit from it.

However, he stress that   Sol  gives out free samples to some community  in Bassa LGA where  women trekked  long distance of 6-7 kilometers to fetch fire woods, adding , this is a new technology that  help also the children to cook fast.

‪Ojobo assured people of Plateau state that the foreign partners will be in the country to hold seminar/workshop to enlighten the people on the need use democracy advance humanity.
