60th Birthday: Governor Sule Pardons 60 Inmates

Governor Abdullahi Alhaji.Sule of Nasarawa State has expressed grief over the number of intellectual kept in correctional service, urging them to be responsible after serving jail term.

 

The Governor stated this when he pardoned 60 Inmates marking his 60th birthday when he paid a visit to Lafia correctional service.

 

Engr.Sule pleaded with the inmates to be of good conduct, stating that the State Government has entered into an agreement with Dangote Group of company and other agricultural company willing to invest in the State to hired inmates with good conduct.

 

“An agricultural company would hire some of you and would be paying you salary which will be useful to you after serving your jail term”.

 

Governor Sule urged the 60 inmates accorded prerogative of mercy to be useful to the society.

 

The Commissioner of Justice in his address said section 212 of the nation’s constitution gives a Governor the power to pardon an inmate.

 

The State Attorney General and Chairman of the advisory council on prerogative of mercy, Abubakar Kana buttressed that the council recommend that the inmates be pardoned.

 

He disclosed that all formalities have been completed and compensation paid to free all those who are not supposed to be here.

 

The State controller of correctional services, E.Okoro  averred that  the prison contained 587 inmates exceeding the 300 capacity.

 

He in addition maintained that 101 inmates were convicted while 7 are condemned to death.

 

Okoro disclosed that the custodial center is lacking of water, perturbed by rusted and leaking of overhead tank with obsolete standby generator, causing untold hardship to inmates.

 

Our major constraint, according to the controller is waste management which he said is a serious hiccup between the correctional Service and people within our border.

 

He also listed problem of the service to include logistic to convey inmates to court, stating that the service has only few functional vehicles.
