45 Killed As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Agatu Town In Benue
No fewer than 45 persons including some unidentified security operatives have been killed by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue state.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the gruesome killing occurred on Sunday night when armed men numbering about seven hundred invaded the community. They reportedly killed 38 persons on Sunday while the others were murdered in another fresh heinous attack in the early hours of Monday at about 5am.
Thousands of people including fishermen and government workers were displaced, even as majority of the victims of the attack had fled to Ogbokpo, the headquarters of Agatu LGA and to some neighboring Igala villages in Kogi state.
The entire clans of Agatu LGA, churches, market places, schools and government offices were completely closed down, just as workers could not go to work for fear of being killed by the suspected herdsmen.
The Deputy Governor Chief Steven Lawani, commissioner for works and transport, Mr. John Ngbede and member representing the Agatu state constituency, Mr. Audu Sule who paid a visit to the area could not gain entry into the affected communities.
The member representing Agatu state constituency in Benue House of Assembly, Mr. Audu Sule whose village was completely razed, narrated the incident to LEADERSHIP, adding that about 38 dead bodies have been recovered so far.
