The House of Representatives today ordered for the immediate suspension of the $40 million (N6 billion) internet surveillance which its contract was awarded by the Jonathan’s administration clandestinely to an Israeli firm.
According to the resolution by the House on Thursday it ordered that there should not be any further action undertaken on the controversial spy project, which has ignites a national ferocity, before the House began total investigation into the issue three weeks ago.
The Project which secretly being carried out, was exposed by an online news, PREMIUM TIMES, was said to have been awarded by President Goodluck Jonathan, to Elbit Systems, an Israeli Info tech firm, to scout on millions of Nigerian internet users.
Moving the motion for the suspension of the Project Hon. Ibrahim Gusau said the project rather than be a solution to the nation’s insecurity issues, will breach on the privacy of the Nigerian populace.
The House also asked why project is shrouded in secrecy especially over its contract award which they said it also violates the federal financial regulations relating to award of contract as laydown in the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007.
Meanwhile the House has mandated its committees on Information and Computer Technology, Human Rights, and National Security, to begin investigation into the project and come out with its result in three weeks.
